Pilot

Pilot dates:

August 19th, 20th, 21st and September 11th & 18th

Day 1

Today we focused on team building and working with iMovie.  Students chose a topic of interest and began working on creating a brief newscast.

One of our students created a video collage of our day.  Click here to view the video!

Day 2
Today was a busy day!  Students finished their mini newscast on their topic of choice.  They used FlipCams and iMovie to create their newscast.

Samples of student's newscasts:

Team 2 Newscast                                  Team 3 Newscast

Students reflected on their experience making their first newscast:

Reflection Questions:

1. What role did you play through the filming process? (recorder, videographer, editor, etc)
2. How much did you contribute? Give a percentage.
3. What would you have liked your group to have done differently?

Student Responses
OLIVIA
1. I was a camera woman and I created questions that were asked during the interview.
2. 90%
3. I would've liked to make different cue cards; bigger. I would have also liked to help more in the editing process. TRIPOD.

DAN C
1. I was an actor, I helped make idea, and I helped with a tiny bit of the editing.
2. I contributed a lot. We all did 25% I think.
3. Added some more humor and scripting. Add more content to stuff like the ticker. I wanted to edit more cause I know I'm good at it.

RUTH
1. I recorded, helped edit.
2. I think we all worked equally.
3. We probably should have practiced and switched roles.

JESSICA
1. I was the recorder, helped a little with editing
2. 25%
3. For the interviewer to face the camera at the right time

ALICIA
1. I was the interviewer, asking Ms. Anderson questions
2. I contributed 90%
3. I wish I could have gone through the interview without laughing or smiling. I wish we could have used a tripod plus I wish I could have spoken more clearly

JOSH
1. I played the role as the editor and Cue Card Holder
2. 90%
3. Tripod and a microphone. Also I would have liked more time!

After reflecting on their mini newscasts, students chose current topic affecting the environment.  We went over the rubric so that each group knows what is expected of them.  Then each group prepared questions to ask Dr. Krystal on their trip to La Jolla.

We spent the afternoon with Dr. Krystal at Scripps Institution of Oceanography!

The students had so much fun.  Click here for one of our student's interviews of Dr. Krystal.

Day 3

Our students learned how to incorporate new technology into their newscast today!  We had workshops on ScreenFlow, and how to use green screen, picture-in-picture and cutaways in iMovie.  Each group worked on incorporating these into their newscast.

After the workshops, students worked on editing their footage from SIO and began scripting the rest of their newscast.

At the end of Day 3 both the students and teachers reflected on the entire process so far.

Click here to view the reflections!

Day 4

Today we gave our students a deadline to have their newscast ready to show to the entire group.  They spent the majority of the day editing their newscasts.

While viewing eachother's newscast, each group scored each group's newscast, based on the rubric.  We had to modify the rubric so that it reflects the time they had to complete each requirement.

The students did a wonderful job commenting on eachother's newscast.

Day 5

For our final day we had our students polish their newscasts based on their peer's comments from the previous day.

The students that participated in the pilot will play an important role in helping other students with their newscasts throughout the school year.  For other students to recognize who the student leaders are, our pilot students made posters complete with their pictures and areas of expertise regarding the newscast.

Final Newscasts!

Summer Institute

Our driving question is: How can science be presented so that everyone can understand it?

Post your driving question or driving question ideas!

Students are able to critically analyze a current event from multiple sources/perspectives related to science and after understanding their target audience, synthesize the content in order to make it accessible to all learners.

What was your hands on activity? Could you use this with your students? Could your scientist come to your class and do this activity with you? Reflect on your time today with your scientist.

I don't know what "hands on activity" refers to. We had a great time with our scientist (Krystal). We got a lot of good footage, talked abou all kinds of relevant stuff, laughed about some not so relevant suff, and learned a tremendous amount about Scripps and the profession of a scientist. I can't say enough good things about Krystal. We are going to create some great learning for our students.

Annaleah: Having the opportunity to meet Krystal and tour her labs was quite a treat. We were able to get to know her more as a person and as a scientist who has great passion for marine biology. Through our tour at Scripps I envisioned that our students would enjoy visiting Krystal and experiencing the environment and work she does. I too foresee future visits to Scripps and having Krystal visit HSHMC as a guest speaker.

It was interesting to be able to walk around and see what Krystal does on a day to day basis. I think our student would really enjoy going on the same tour we went on. I think Krystal could come to our school in a variety of ways: Career speaker, bring in real sea life, do some lab type activities, do a presentation on the water life in San Diego and how we affect it, talk about the human factor, do a talk on how the ocean affects our lives especially in San Diego, and talk about what life is like as a post-doc and what it took to get there.

Krystal is going to be a GREAT resource for HSHMC and we are looking forward to continue our brainstorming for what other ways we caninclude Krystal in our school.... we better use her as much as possible quickly though as Emit is coming soon!

Krystal's tour of her lab at SIO was fabulous!  She took us to the tanks that hold the marine organisms, which are studied by various scientists at SIO.  We were able to touch/hold starfish, sea urchins, sponges, etc.  I think our students would love to visit the lab to see and interact with these organisms.  Additionally, I'd like to have Krystal, as well as other scientists, share her knowledge at our school.

I really like the question " who decided what you see on the news". It's a very interesting topica- to me at least. Great work- you have such a broad list here. It's a great starting point for what we will be doing. You guys bring such good energy and enthusiasm to the class. I can see it catching on.

Thanks Maggie. If you enjoy what you do, then good things will come.

I'm looking forward to her coming to SDSU on Friday so that we can get further video and information about her personally to begin to make our scientist video. I also can't wait for our bio teacher BONINE to hear about all of this and get in on this work! He's going to love this! GO TEAM! Also, Maggie, thanks for recognizing our enthusiasm and team work! We love what we do and we love who we do it with. It makes a difference!

We are having such an incredible time with the pilot program. Our STUDENTS are so THRILLED and EXCITED to work on the projects that they adored our scientist Dr. Krystal. This is going to be so great to get the momentum built before the school year even begins and to have these students take ownership and leadership is a site to be seen. I'm honored!
